Church had become a job to me. I had so many irons in the fire. I did tons of things and was happy about none of it. I was doing things because no one else would. Doing all things with a joyful heart turned into a steady stream of resentment. So, with a resentful heart I continued to do what needed done.
May and June flew by as we prepared for Sheila's retirement and party. I have a great group of people I work with on the Nurture Committee (the event and function planning group of the church). They do as much if not more than I do; a lot of the same things. The party was grand, a perfect send off to a wonderful friend and pastor. Sadness over the change fueled all that I did.
A few things about me: I am a loyal person. My mouth runs faster than my brain sometimes. I wear my heart on my sleeve unless/until you burn me.
Our new pastor was a very young man. I will not go into specifics because this post is not about him. I opened myself up to the change in leadership and tried very hard to be helpful. Things happened and it did not go well. I was burned...
I found myself in a very unpleasant and spiritually trying situation. On top of my previous spiritual exhaustion; I did not trust, respect or feel respected by the new pastor. By August, I was forcing myself to go to church. When I did go, I worked in the nursery.
My home church, the church that I have been a member of for over 30 years, was no longer a welcoming place. I was church shopping.
I have doubted a lot of things this year. The church as an organization, humanity. Never did I doubt God's love.
Advent and Christmas is such a special time of year for me. I really hoped that I would be renewed this holiday season. The music is amazing and the message is so special. How can you not celebrate a baby being born? (Another blog post).
I have celebrated Christmas with my family, friends, students and coworkers. Every celebration was unique and uplifting. The most meaningful Christmas memory from the year comes from a four year old. While working with the children at church on December 9th, a little girl had drawn a picture of the nativity.
She handed her picture to me and said, "Here, this is for you." I told her to keep it because she did such a good job on it. Her reply to me was, "You keep it. I want you to remember me forever and ever." I said, "I will always remember you. I love you, I will never forget you." She continued, "I want you to remember me forever and ever and never forget me."
I hadn't forgotten God this last year yet Jesus talked to me through this little girl. Several times this past year, I had been asked, "where is God in this?" God is always near. He isn't always that big red truck that is impossible to miss. You have to look for him in some, if not most, situations.
You have to follow your (insert your shape here). I can generally find him if I follow my heart. The wise men followed a star; to a stable. Imagine, the King lying in a barn with the dirty animals. Through writing this post, I've learned one last lesson for 2018:
If you seek the King in only the pleasant places, you will never find him.
There's a New Kid in Town
There's a New Kid in Town
We're looking for The King
The new Messiah
We're following the star
Shining brighter
Old man won't you help us if you can
He shook his head
But he pointed his hand
The new Messiah
We're following the star
Shining brighter
Old man won't you help us if you can
He shook his head
But he pointed his hand
There's a new kid in town
And he's lying in a manger down the road
There's a new kid in town
But he's just another baby I suppose
Heaven knows
There's a new kid in town
Here in Bethlehem
And he's lying in a manger down the road
There's a new kid in town
But he's just another baby I suppose
Heaven knows
There's a new kid in town
Here in Bethlehem
I see you've traveled far
Bearing treasures
You say these gifts are for
The new Kings pleasures
Well I've heard
That a King might come
But up 'til now there hasn't been one
Bearing treasures
You say these gifts are for
The new Kings pleasures
Well I've heard
That a King might come
But up 'til now there hasn't been one
There's a new kid in town
And he's lying in a manger down the road
There's a new kid in town
But he's just another baby I suppose
Heaven knows
There's a new kid in town
Here in Bethlehem
And he's lying in a manger down the road
There's a new kid in town
But he's just another baby I suppose
Heaven knows
There's a new kid in town
Here in Bethlehem
There's a new kid in town
And he's lying in a manger down the road
There's a new kid in town
But he's just another baby I suppose
Heaven knows
There's a new kid in town
Here in Bethlehem
And he's lying in a manger down the road
There's a new kid in town
But he's just another baby I suppose
Heaven knows
There's a new kid in town
Here in Bethlehem
